Gaithersburg sits along the I-270 Technology Corridor and is home to major research, technology, and life-science employers including NIST, AstraZeneca, Leidos, GeneDx, and Miltenyi Biotec. The area’s laboratories, research facilities, and corporate offices often require controlled access and professional security coverage. With more than 4,000 businesses and a population of over 70,000, the city draws a steady mix of commuters, conference visitors, and international travelers, and those crowds need guards who can de-escalate calmly and professionally.
Rio Washingtonian Center and the Kentlands draw heavy retail and restaurant traffic year-round, with loitering, shoplifting, and after-hours break-ins common to any high-traffic shopping district.
Meanwhile, fast-growing residential communities like Crown and King Farm, along with the historic Olde Towne district, need consistent patrol coverage as new mixed-use development continues to reshape the city.
Maryland regulates private security through the Maryland State Police Licensing Division. Personnel assigned as security guards must meet Maryland’s applicable certification, fingerprinting, background-check, and training requirements. Active police officers certified by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission may qualify to provide security services without separate security guard certification, and qualifying current or recently separated police officers may be exempt from the initial security guard training requirement. Armed personnel must meet applicable Maryland firearm authorization requirements. OPPS maintains commercial general liability insurance as required for licensed Maryland security guard agencies.
